They sell several Educational DVDs that are fabulous! They have a wide range of DVDs that cover album design, marketing, portrait & wedding techniques, and my favorite is the video seminar.

It may seem pricey, but it's a heck of lot cheaper than going to college for photography and you will be listening to actual photographers. And not just any photographers...these are photographers that are known in the industry and highly respected.

There is just SO much to learn about photography and
these DVDs contain a plethora of information!

Plus 1 or not?

This morning I was listening to a radio show discuss whether or not it was ok if a bride & groom tell guests NO plus 1 unless you are married to the plus 1. For those who don't know what a plus 1 is....when you get an invite to a wedding or party, typically you're allowed to bring 1 guest with you. But today's topic was basically saying "it depends on who the plus 1 is".

One caller said "no bling, no bring." Meaning, if the plus one isn't a spouse or fiance, then you shouldn't bring the guest. I don't know, I am kind of torn on this. It does cost money to feed each person, and you really don't know who all these "plus 1's" are going to be, but at the same time you don't want your guest to be solo.

In the end, my opinion is, it is YOUR event. If you are paying for it, you have the right to dictate your guest list. And guests should not be offended. When an invite reads "no kids", please don't be rude and bring them anyways. If an invite says "4:00 wedding", please don't show up at 4:00. You get the idea!

How to pick the perfect point & shoot camera

I came across this article on CNN and thought I'd share because I myself need a good point & shoot camera. To me, it's easier to pick out a pro camera vs a little point and shoot. And while I love my canon, it is just way to big to take to parties, events, etc. So if you're like me, you want a sleek little camera that will do it all, without having to change lenses or read a huge manual.

No Wire Hangers!!

Has anyone seen the classic movie "Mommie Dearest"? If not, you may not get the title of the blog. Let's just put it this way, mommie did NOT like wire hangers!

Fast forward to 2010, where wire hangers can quite possibly be a bride's best friend!

I came across the fabulous Etsy shop belonging to LilaFrances. She designs custom wire hangers to be used to hold your wedding dress! SOOOO much cuter than the plastic hanger that comes with most wedding dresses.

So where did you go or where are you going on your honeymoon? When Keith proposed to me, the first thing I told him (after saying yes) was "we are going to Italy!" We enjoyed two long weeks in Italy, starting in Venice, then to Florence, Pisa, San Marino, & finally Rome.

I honestly wish I would have spent less on the wedding and more on the honeymoon!

So I started searching the Internet for the top 10 honeymoon destinations, many of the lists are similar so I compiled a list from all my findings.

Wedding Shoes for You & Me

Have you all heard of TOM's shoes? Here's my brief synopsis...

In 2006 an American went to Argentina and found many children had no shoes to protect their feet. He started Tom's shoes, which matches every pair shoes purchased with a new free pair to a child in need! Later that year, he returned to Argentina with 10,000 pair of shoes! Awesome!

So how does this pertain to brides? Well TOM's has now created a wedding line! They've got shoes for the bride, bridesmaids, groomsmen, & even the kids.

If your a high heel kinda gal, you may not care for the shoes right away. But keep in mind, they are canvas shoes, they're comfortable, they're affordable, & you are helping a child!

Just imagine going one whole day without shoes! Could you do it?

Honeymoon Registry

Honeymoon Registries have been around for a while, but more & more couples are taking advantage of them now more than ever. I think this is a GREAT idea, especially for those couples who already have everything, and don't really need things like pots & pans, towels, sheets, etc.

The site I found is called Honeymoon Wishes. Couples can set up their own personal site, and your friends & family can literally purchase things such as suite upgrades, tours, car rentals, wine tastings, gondola rides, or just general trip contribution! How tres fab is that?

I can honestly say if I had to go back & do it again, I would trim down on the wedding & reception and would have spent more on the honeymoon. Keith & I spent 2 weeks in Italy for our honeymoon, which I loved, but I could have spent another 2 weeks there if it we wouldn't have spent so much on the wedding itself.

Creative Wedding Idea

"If you've been to one wedding you've been to all", is what I hear alot. Yes, a lot of the same elements are used at every wedding, and I say the reason for that is usually tradition. But I have surfing the web and found that this really isn't the case. Brides are getting more & more creative each year- and not necessarily spending more money!

It's your wedding day, so don't be afraid to do something a little different. It's ok to incorporate your personal style & taste into a wedding. After all, it is the most emotionally (& financially) invested day of your life.

So with that said, I found a website called Style Me Pretty, which is a plethora of all things wedding! There is a section solely dedicated to DIY wedding ideas! If you need some wedding inspiration, this is the blog for you!

Here's one idea that I thought was certainly unique...save the date hankies!

I'm Back

Well obviously as you can see from yesterday's post I am back from Vegas. We always have a great time when we're there, despite coming back with only $2.00. Eh, what can you do right?

Since I've been back, I've been thinking of ways to "re-do" MPC Photography. I am thinking of changing the name to Carolin Lawton Photography, but I'm undecided. Either my name or something cutesy- like "I Shoot Brides", but that's already taken.

I'm also swamped with orders lately. I'm working on prints, albums, portfolios, etc. This happens to me all the time though, everyone places their orders at the same time. So...just an fyi girls, it make take a little longer than normal to get these albums designed and delivered.

This weekend I am SO excited to be shooting Anna & Jordan's engagement session! We photographed Anna's sister's wedding too, so I am THRILLED to work with their family again!

Wedding Shoes

I have a major love for shoes. I'm one of those girls who will suffer in pain for nice shoes. I know, I know but we all have are vices!

So when I was getting married back in 2004, I was really excited about looking for shoes. I told Keith I wanted to splurge on some Manolo's. He told me go ahead...but then reality set in and I couldn't see spending $500+ on white shoes. Sadly that was before the whole trend of wearing colorful shoes came about...Because I would have some hot pink Louboutin's sitting in my closet right now.

Fast forward to the point of this blog, I was browsing the Knot for blogging ideas and came across a shoe ad for Paris Hilton. She may not be the brightest bulb, but the woman knows shoes! She has a gorgeous collection of wedding shoes, although the height on some of them scare even me! Nevertheless, they are really ~~uncomfortable~~ pretty wedding shoes for those brave enough to walk down the aisle in 4"+ heels!

Fine China? Yay or Nay?

I was reading a blog, and today's topic was fine china. As I read through all the links I noticed not many people had "fine" china anymore. Most comments were that it wasn't usable, didn't make sense, & overpriced. All of which I do understand.

So my question is, are brides still registering for fine china? Is it even something you really want? I do like the idea of having China...for some reason it feels like the "thing to do" when you get married. I didn't register for any but I wish I had. However I will say, I'm not the type to never use it! :)

So what are bride's registering for now? And what are your thought on China as wedding gifts?

Lisa & Jay were married at the Columbus Amphitheater in downtown Columbus on May 15th. They had an intimate ceremony with just close friends & family. It was my first time shooting a wedding here, and I thought it was such a great location for a ceremony!

After there ceremony, the reception was at the Rivermill Event Centre where guests dined and laughed and enjoyed each other. Taylor Mack provided a very tasty cake, adorned with a unique cake topper of a couple holding hands & riding horses.

Lindsey & Adam {Wedding}

Lindsey & Adam's wedding reminded me of how blessed I am to do what I do. They are one of the nicest couple's I've ever had the privilege of working with!

Lindsey was glowing all day and Adam couldn't stop smiling.

The ceremony was one of the most heartfelt ceremonies to date. Adam became a single parent when his daughter's mother died of cancer. Lindsey has fulfilled the roll of being a wonderful mother and has never looked back. During the ring ceremony, a tiny ring which once belonged to the birth mother, was given to their daughter. Lindsey recited the most heartfelt vows to promise to love & cherish them both. I don't think there was a dry eye in the house at that moment.

During the reception, Lindsey & Adam really showed off their dancing skills! I was so impressed by Lindsey's rendition of Michael Jackson's Thriller! And Adam....well...let's just say you would never guess this guy has moves! But he certainly does! :)

Lindsey & Adam we enjoyed you & your families very much and we thank you for selecting us for your wedding!

Kamilah's family portrait session was THE most scariest session- ever. We started out on the Phenix City side of the riverwalk, near the damn. I've shot here several times before so I didn't even hesitate about having them meet me there. Kamilah and her 3 brothers and myself headed straight for the big rock area in front of the damn.

It was very bright out so we moved around a few times to try and avoid the "squinting" eye shots. Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to even move locations when someone ran over and started yelling "the water is rising"! WHAT! There was NO siren to let us know that the smaller damn had opened!

As we headed back to change locations, we were TRAPPED! The area that we had just walked over less than 15 minutes ago, was now covered in water. We paced back and forth trying to find the best place to cross. Several men told us to go as far upstream as possible..."just in case." I realized that no matter what we did, we were getting wet. So I took my shoes off and threw them across to the dry side. The water wasn't that high yet (right at the knee) so I was going to just leave my camera around my neck, but decided to pack everything up into my backpack/camera bag. And THANK GOD I did!

Even though though the water wasn't that high, it was moving fast and the rocks were slippery! Kamilah had on wedges and her brothers had on new shoes so they all decided to take their shoes off and carry them across. Again, because it was so slippery and fast some men jumped in to help us across. As we slowly tried to cross, the man at the very end of this human chain yanked each of us so hard that we fell in completely! Kamilah & one of her brothers both dropped their shoes and they went floating down stream! A fisherman saved Kamilah's shoes but her brother's shoes were gone! We were all wet, hurting, but alive! THANK GOD! And my camera was not damaged at all- Bonus!

Needless to say, we rescheduled for another time. I only got a few shots in that short 15 minutes, not enough for a slideshow. And because I didn't get a chance to change location, please forgive the squinty eye images! Other than that, I LOVE the color coordination of the outfits! I think their attire is exactly what should be done in family portraits. Not the exact same outfits, but blends very well! Perfect!

I'd like to introduce you all to a local Make-up Artist named Leonna Shay Hart, owner of Beauty By Virtue. I know a lot of people ask about having a professional make-up artist for their wedding and engagement photos, but are hesitant because they don't normally wear make-up or they are hesitant about the price. So to assist you with your decision, I decided to do an interview with Miss Hart that may convince some of you out there about the importance of hiring a professional make-up artist.

How long have you been a professional make-up artist?

What made you decide to become a professional make-up artist?

I wasn't always a "girly" girl so it took me a while to get into makeup. But once I did, I loved it. I watched videos on YouTube and learned the basics of how to apply it. I started to get really good at it, and everywhere I went, people would ask me who did my makeup. Once I told them I did it, they would ask if I was a MUA. After a while, I started to realize that makeup was something that a lot of women were interested in, and women that didn't wear makeup would wear it if they knew what they were doing. So I started practicing on my friends and family, that's when I decided to be a part-time freelance MUA. The before & afters is what sold me!

Do you have a favorite brand of make-up?

I can't really say that I have a favorite brand, but I do use a lot of MAC products. I also love Smashbox, Too Face, Urban Decay, and Coastal Scents. Those are more on the pricey side, so if you can't afford them there are some great drugstore brands like L'Oreal, Covergirl, & Revlon (which I also use)!

What is the biggest mistake you see that a lot of brides make?

Some of the biggest mistakes I see brides make when it come to makeup is they either don't wear any, don't wear enough, or they get one of their friends to do their makeup instead of a professional.

How important is it to have your make-up professionally done for photos/wedding?

It's important to hire a professional MUA because bridal makeup has a certain "classic" or "timeless" look to it. A professional should always be hired to create this look, and make it unique to the bride-to-be. MUA's also understand photography and lighting, and know how to apply the makeup so it still looks great in your pictures; a photographer's camera will reveal any imperfections or flaws. MUA's have been trained to cover up and conceal certain things that a professional photographer's camera will pick up.

Do you have any make-up tricks to cover up acne, scars, or to make the face look slimmer?

As a MUA, I have had to learn the "tricks of the trade" to cover acne and scars. There are also techniques of contouring and highlighting that are used to make the face look slimmer, make the cheekbones really pop, and hide a double-chin. A good makeup artist always studies the face to determine what features should be down-played, and what features should be brought forward.

Can you cover tattoos?

Covering tattoos is very important when it comes to weddings! Wedding and formal gowns can be very revealing, and you have to remember that your wedding pictures will be in your family forever. I do offer tattoo covering to brides and their wedding parties. I always do a consultation first, to make sure the tattoo can be completely covered, and to determine pricing (which varies based on size and color of the tattoo).

What would you say to those women who say "I never wear make-up"?

I would say that there's no reason to be afraid of wearing makeup. Most women don't wear makeup because of the "fear of the unknown." They don't know how to apply it, and so they just don't. I work with clients like that, to show them how to use makeup to create a very natural look. And even though you may not wear makeup on a daily basis, you would definitely want to wear makeup on your wedding day because the photograper's camera will pick up every flaw on your face if they're not concealed properly with makeup.

The professional application of make-up can greatly enhance your images. For those who don't wear make-up I encourage you to seek a professional make-up artist to enhance your look, not change you. The lights from bright flashes can sometimes make you appear washed out and make-up can create warmer and more natural skin tones.

Davy & Rebecca {Wedding}

Davy & Rebecca's wedding was at one of the most beautiful Churches in Columbus, The Church of the Holy Family. It was my first time shooting here and we were pleasantly surprised by all the renovations made to the church.

After Davy & Rebecca were pronounced man and wife, they walked down the long aisle, and when the doors opened, Rebecca erupted into laughter. I turned around to see a John Deere Tractor sitting outside with a "just married" sign attached to the back. This has to be one of the most funniest wedding moments ever. And thanks to Davy's surprise, it is now added to my collection of favorite wedding images.

The reception was held at Rebecca's grandparent's home under the moonlight and beautiful tent. There was lots of dinner, dancing, laughing, hugs, and toasts. The Tag Williams Band provided the music for the night and did such a fabulous job keeping everyone entertained!

I am so very happy for you, Davy & Rebecca!

I hope you enjoyed your wedding & honeymoon!

I so enjoyed shooting Thalia & Jerod's wedding on March 13th! Mother Nature wanted to play a little (by raining as soon as we stepped outside with the ladies)...but she was just teasing and the rest of the day turned out to be gorgeous. The pastor delivered a powerful sermon on marriage. It's always so good to hear those messages to remind you of why you got married.

After the ceremony, everyone hopped on a trolley and headed to the Trade Center...but not before the ladies changed into their pink converse! LOVE that idea!!

During the reception Thalia's uncle serenaded them. Think: Barry White! The man can sing I tell ya! It was definitely a nice treat!

After the ceremony the newlyweds honeymooned in Jamaica for a week! I know they had a fun, relaxing vacation! I'm jealous! :)

I always get excited whenever I have the chance to order new equipment or products. My latest purchase is the Canon 85mm f1.8 lens!

This lens produces some of the sharpest images and is known for creating that natural background blur! This lens is great for portraits and the f-stop is GREAT for low light situations!
I am in love!
The next lens I am going to purchase is a wide angle lens. I have my eye on a few lenses but I am just undecided! I have 3 in mind but I am excited to get one before my next wedding in April! Any photogs out there, please feel free to leave me a comment letting me know your thought on this topic!

Today I shot Brandi & Richard's engagement session at Callaway Gardens! It has been a busy March- 3 weddings and an engagement session- so please excuse my lack of blogging. I have preoccupied with editing! I will have Thalia & Jerod's wedding images up soon.

Thursday, my brother and I are going to see Jerry Seinfeld!! I am a HUGE Seinfeld fan and so excited. I probably won't get any pictures since it clearly states on the tickets- NO CAMERAS! How can you tell a photographer that?
In other news, Keith & I have purchased tickets to Las Vegas for this September (my birthday). I just LOVE Vegas! That city is just so much fun! I am a true slot machine mama! I can sit at one machine alll day and night. LOL! We have a huge group of friends that are going so I am thrilled to go back! Maybe I will come back a millionaire this time...

And final update- I was asked to speak to at a local school about photography! I am so excited about this! I'm a bit nervous, why? The counselor called me and told me the students are really interested in photography and want to know more about how my work day flows and about my education that led me to photography. They will be in for a surprise to learn my degrees are in Criminal Justice and Justice Administration and that I really wanted to work for the FBI.

So, blog world I need your help. I'd like to buy little gifts for the students. What could I give them? I was thinking pens or bookmarks or cups? I have no idea! I have about 4 weeks until the presentation so I need to order fast! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Lindsey & Adam {Engagement Session}

Last Saturday I drove to Eufaula, AL to shoot Lindsey & Adam's engagement session. This small town with a huge history, had so many beautiful places to shoot. My mind just raced as I drove through the streets lined with old buildings and huge plantation homes.

We initially planned to start at a gazebo in the center of downtown, but as luck would have it, construction was going on. So I followed Lindsey & Adam to a graveyard. Yes. A graveyard. But don't worry, we didn't shoot there. Just outside the graveyard was one of the cities, and if I'm not mistaken, one of the state's oldest fountains.

I always tell my clients that I make them work for their engagement pictures. I say this because I always like to walk around and explore different areas. Well...Lindsey and Adam made ME work as well! We walked and walked, and hiked, and climbed. But I am sooo glad we did because we got so many great shots. Eufaula was the perfect place for their engagement session!

Their wedding is in April and also in Eufaula and I can't wait!

Terry Lyn & Jonathan {Wedding}

Terry Lyn & Jonathan exchanged vows on February 20th at Infantry Chapel in Fort Benning. I know I say this every time I shoot a wedding there, but I really love this chapel since of course Keith & I were married there. It is simple but beautiful.

There was no huge rush or confusion since they chose not to have a huge wedding party or formal reception. Everyone was calm and enjoying the day. Not that I don't love a big wedding, but their wedding really made me think, "this is how it should be." Not a big show... just exchanging your vows and love. Isn't that the point after all?

Terry Lyn wore a beautiful gown with a brown sash. Her shoes were STUNNING...y'all know I LOVE shoes! I want a pair in hot pink! :) Jonathan wore his army uniform and had such a proud look on his face as Terry Lyn walked down the aisle. I love that moment! The anticipation and happiness and love is overwhelming! As a photographer, you get to be that close to feel all the emotions!

This is also the first time I decided to take a picture of the couple sitting down with the church in the background. I love how it turned out and I think I will be incorporating this shot for future weddings.

Amy & Clarke {Engagement Session}

Amy & Clarke were my first engagement session for 2010! Although it seems like I haven't done much since December (thus the lack of blogs), I have been busy doing "office stuff". So it was great getting behind the lens again.

We started downtown and ended on the Phenix City side of the Riverwalk. The water was quite high because of the melted snow. I wish my camera were waterproof as I would have loved to shoot their engagement session in the snow!

Their slideshow is also the first slideshow using the new Client Viewing feature! I am still trying to learn all of the capabilities of this feature. This is where all slideshows will be posted in the future. There is also a way to link proofing, however if I allow this feature, the slideshow will be private which I don't like (unless of course the client specifically requests this).

Wedding (Honeymoon) Tip!

While watching tv tonight, TLC had a traveler's tip that I think would definitely benefit those traveling by air to their Honeymoon Destinations! This of course applies to any couple traveling by plane.

Pack half of your clothes in each others suitcase! That way, if one of your bags turns up lost, you still have something to wear! Helllooooo...why didn't I think of that!

When Keith & I got married, we went to Italy for two weeks. Our first stop was Boston, then Paris, then Venice, Italy. So with all those stops, we should have known someone's bag would be delayed. And of course- it was MINE. Why does it have to be the woman's bag?! And why was it lost in Italy of all places!! Do you know how expensive it is buy clothes over there?

Thank God my bag arrived that night...but if I had packed half of my things in Keith's bag, I wouldn't have been AS worried.

So for all those travelers out there- you now know what to do! ;)

Sandy Puc Tour

Yesterday I went to the Sandy Puc Photography Seminar with Julie (of JE Hedges Photography) and we met Emma (of Emma Steinmetz Photography) there. I always love attending these classes because it re-energizes my passion for photography. I walk away with so much information, ideas, and a laundry list of things to do.

Sandy Puc is an amazing photographer, and she shared SOOO many ideas and stories with us. Last nights class was mainly on portrait photography, posing, and marketing. Although I prefer wedding photography, listening to her talk made we want to possibly push my portraits more. My only drawback is not owning a studio. While I love location sessions and the great outdoors, there are so many fun props and backgrounds that I would love to experiment with but no where to use or store them. So MAYBE in the future I will think about getting a studio....that's further doooooooown the road though! LOL!

For you photographers out there, I HIGHLY recommend that you attend the Sandy Puc Tour. Whether you are a seasoned photographer or new, there is a lot to gain. Next year's subject will be weddings so I will definitely be there again.

I hope everyone has an amazing week & weekend. This weekend is Chinese New Year and Valentine's Day and we plan to celebrate both. On top of my engagement session and family session I will be photographing it's going to be a busy weekend.

Since I am still in the off season for weddings and such I decided to join the blog world in these "Show Us Your Life" topics until I get back to business...which will be very soon!

This weeks topic is Beauty Tips & Products. So the way this works is there are various topics every week or month I think and you basically blog about your likes on the topic at hand. I guess this will let you know a little more about your favorite photographer! ;)

I am a beauty product junky! I am not dedicated to any ONE line because I think several companies have something good to offer. Of course it has taken a lot of trial and error and I still like experimenting with new products.

So here is my list of favorites:

And of course to apply the foundation, eye shadows, and blush it is ALL about the brushes. It took me a while to convert over and to understand the importance...but again, after trial and error I got the swing of it! And I learned that those cheap .99 cent brushes won't cut it!

I also go to YouTube a lot to look for tutorials on how to apply make-up and to get tips! It has really helped out alot!

So that's just a little tidbit about my love beauty products! Is there anything that you really like or recommend?

Hi all! I am back from Florida! We had a great time celebrating Keith's 30th Birthday! We had 10 wonderful friends come stay with us for the weekend in Orlando. My fabulous in-laws got us a huge 3 bedroom condo that had 2 additional pull out sofas so no one was on the floor! We had so much fun at City Walk, NBA City, Margaritaville, Planet Hollywood, the outlet mall, and just hanging out.

But now it's back to business! My website host recently added an amazing new feature that is going to combine slideshows and client proofing. I have been working on getting it ready. The only problem is I have to upload each slideshow all over again which is going to take some time.

If you go to my website you will see a new option called CLIENT VIEWING. I don't have any slideshows uploaded yet but you can go ahead and take a look at it. I love that I can now have the slideshows categorized into Engagement Sessions, Weddings, & Portraits!

I think you all will love it because you can now view it in full screen, add more than one song for those long slideshows, and upload it right to Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, etc! I am so excited and hope to have some slideshows moved over this week!

For now I will leave the Slideshow option there until I get them moved over, but eventually it will no longer be available. You will just go straight to client viewing to see the slideshows!

Wedding Season

My 2010 wedding season is starting to shape up. I've been busy working on adding new albums, finishing some orders, and working on some advertising.

I have 2 engagement sessions and a wedding scheduled for February that I am excited about!

February 1st will be Keith's 30th birthday and we'll be celebrating in Orlando. We're leaving Thursday and will be back either Monday or Tuesday. I am really looking forward to the trip because we have a group of about 10 friends going.

We also signed up for Disney's Give a Day, Get a Day volunteer program but they are having network issues so it looks like we won't get our passes by this weekend. But that's ok we will still have plenty to do! I'll take plenty of pics and be back to blog next week!
